Unit 9- Free Range Exhibition 2017

Samantha Wheelwright is a freelance and editorial photographer based in London where her work was exhibited in the ‘FE4TURE’ Series in the Free Range exhibition 2017.

This is the image that grabbed my attention whilst looking through the Free Range exhibition 2017 website. The first thing that court my attention was the colours used in the sewers of photos, the model is wearing bright clothing to stand out in front of the background, so the model isn’t blend in with the green grass and sand, but the colours also go well with each other and use she uses similar tones such as the top the model is wearing and the sand and the jean shorts have similar tones to the sky, which makes the image whole. The next thing I noticed was the models eyes and face, this is because the eye stand out a lot, especially with her facial expression the model has.

Samantha Wheelwright also has her own website, where she has her portfolio work, show casing her portrait work.

She also has a Facebook and Twitter page where her talks about her work and how she in inspired to take the images that she photographs.

Seeing Samantha Wheelwright’s work has inspired my to use similar colours with in my own images, such as the clothing of each model and the background used. By thinking about this, if I was to use a natural background such as a forest or field, I would try and put something either on the model or in the background that would link them both together.

Unit 9-Elisabeth Moss

Elizabeth was born in Nashville, TN. She got a start in the photography industry as a model at the age of 13, when living in Europe and Japan. When she moved to New york at the age of 17, she soon became working as an Art Director and Digital retouching artist. By the age of 20, her clients included ‘Vogue Italia, W’ and ‘Yves Saint Laurent’, she was also featured in the documentary ‘Body Image’, which was directed by a two time Academy Award winner director, Barbara Kopple, this is when and where she showed her viewers her work.

I love these photos and how they’re showing such a unique beauty of the fashion, when editing her photos she has highlighted their amazing natural individuality and the way they present themselves. These photos are just so graceful with positioning of the models. With these photos, I also love the dark colours surrounding them, allowing them to stand out with no distractions. They’re quite cold toned and the model have been brightens which makes the model stand out most in the image.

I can honestly say because this is such a unique way of editing and presenting the photographs, that their is nothing that I dislike or would change about it all. As it’s already perfect at highlighting the individuality of all these beautiful people and their clothing and creating a different look to her photos.

Unit 9- Gray Sorrenti

‘Now that Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner are all also photographers, it was just a matter of time before the budding 16-year-old model Gray Sorrenti, fresh from her cover of Vogue Italia this summer, would end up behind the camera, too. As it turns out, that’s actually where she’s even more at home – no surprise given that her father is Mario Sorrenti, the famed fashion photographer known for his arresting images of models like Kate Moss, who he notably dated in the 90’s.

But post-Kate, Sorrenti married fellow photographer Mary Frey, and now their daughter Gray is stay true to both of their roots, shooting her coterie of downtown, modelesque teens primarily on film. It’s the same crew she tapped – and accented with Twizzlers, toy alligators, and a hint of Chanel – for her magazine editorial debut this fall in the print-only title Moodboard, though one key figure was missing: Sorrenti’s best friend, Blue Lindeberg, an emerging actress and the daughter of the designer Johan Lindeberg. (To be clear, Sorrenti isn’t just friends with fellow scions: from the looks of her Instagram, names like Pierpaolo Picciolo and Tom Sachshave made the cut, too.)’

The work of Gray Sorrenti is in the them of different outfits and mainly based on fashion. I love how he has chosen the colours in each photograph go well with the different skin tones, even with some of his photographs are in black and white. In the first image shown, the photographs has been edited by making the contrast and brightness higher, creating a change to his work that are in colour.  The colour of the background in the image shown above works well with the models skin tone and chose of clothing. The photograph its self is quite different to most, as the image shown has a low contrast and is very unsaturated. The colours in the image shown, are similar as they’re are  not very bright but still fit in with the theme and goes well as a image as a whole.

Most of his work I like as most of his images are different, but I prefer to edit my own images different to hers. I also like how she has positioned the model as it is not a usual position, it is unique to her photography and other photographers don’t normally use positions like this for their models in the work.

Unit 9- David Bailey

‘In 1959, Bailey became a photographic assistant at the John French studio, and in May 1960, he was a photographer for John Cole’s Studio Five, before being contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine later that year. He also undertook a large amount of freelance work.

Considered one of the pioneers of contemporary photography, David Bailey is credited with photographing some of the most compelling images of the last five decades. He first rose to fame making stars of a new generation of models including Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree. Since then his work has never failed to impress and inspire critics and admirers alike, capturing iconic images of legends such as: The Rolling Stones, the Kray twins, Damien Hirst and Kate Moss, these simple yet powerful black and white images have become a genre in their own right.’

This artist photographs women in the 60s, this works with my idea as it is different styles of the way people dress and present themselves. I believe David Bailey use a film SLR camera for most of his images is something different. Even though in that time in photography most photographer used a SLR camera, he used in a way that was different to every other photographer. Some of his images are of poor quality and not HD but the content of the images are well made. The actual theme of the images don’t completely link to change and the human condition, but it does show how fashion from the 60s, 70s and 80s are different to now and how the fashion has changed through time.

What I love about these images is the composition of them both, I like the pose’s of the model’s and the studio they’re in and also the lighting positioning. It shows a load of expression through their body language and the fact the all of his images are in black and white. I like that the back drop being used is plain and simply, making the viewer focus on the model more, yet I think if something was added to it, it would make the image more interesting and more to look at in the images.

There is not much I can say about anything I dislike about the images because there isn’t anything that I truly dislike. One thing that I believe I would change though is having a variety of races feature in the images, firstly because of equality reason, as most of his models are white, and female. I believe his photography would apple to a lot more people/ viewers if there more different races and genders as models. This add a completely different feel to his photography and would expand he work a little more.

Artist Research- Etienne-Jules Marey

‘A polymorphic scientific, Etienne Jules Marey explored numerous techniques and disciplines, obsessed by one unique concept: movement. First interested in flight, he studied birds and imagined mechanical devices capable of flying. From 1878, he focused on movement within human beings and, inspired by Edward Muybridge he had met in 1881, used photography to document his research. He thus imagined, in 1882, a camera entitled photographic gun that enabled him to capture a moving subject in twelve poses. Etienne Jules Marey thus decomposed the gestures of men practicing sports, animals in motion, everyday tasks precisely observed and even the migration of air. He also invented the chonophotography that would be the precursor of cinema. Photography in its early days was the ultimate accomplice of reality but with Etienne Jules Marey (and Edward Muybridge), photography suddenly also captured the invisible.’

This artist photographs time based, he does this by doing continuous shooting, which allows the camera to take loads of photographs conturing the movement of the model. I will be using the method in my own photography, I will be using a model moving, such as jumping or running in a certain direction. I then will edit the photographs all together and turn them in black and white which also links with another artist’s work.
